Tony's I-75 Restaurant - Birch Run

Tony's in Birch Run
I remember getting a BLT at Tony's on my way up north one summer.  My mind was completely blown by this BLT.  The bacon was stacked incredibly high and it was all over my plate as well.  The BLT comes with a full pound of bacon!  All of the sandwiches were ridiculously large.  We decided to stop there on the way home from a trip Up North and grab some carry-out.

Interior of Tony's

Since I'm not 10 years old anymore, I think that the novelty wore off a bit.  I was simply unimpressed with my food.  First of all, I'm pretty sure that this bacon is deep fried.  This leaves it not crispy, but sort of... rubbery?  It is a very strange texture.  Secondly, I asked for mayo on the side and it was completely forgotten.  Third, I ordered the Poutine.  That was fine.  But how can you mess up french fries with cheese and gravy?  You can't.

BLT with one pound of bacon from Tony's

Since this is one of the few restaurants that Food Network's Diners Drive-Ins and Dives has visited in Michigan, I expected more.  It really is a novelty because of the huge sandwiches - no real quality.  Plus, the prices are very high since you get so much food.

Go to Tony's once in your life!  But I don't recommend making it a regular thing.

Manley's Smoked Fish - St. Ignace

Manley's Smoked Fish in St Ignace

The first thing that I noticed about Manley's Smoked Fish was the size of the buildings.  I think that the smokehouse is bigger than the actual store.  Inside, the store is packed with different types of smoked fish and lots of Green Bay Packers memorabilia.  Manley's Smoked Fish is located a short distance out of St Ignace.

The Smokehouse

Besides smoked fish and fish dip, you can also get smoked beef sticks and cheese curds (staying true to his Wisconsin roots once again).

The fish case!

This is probably the best Smoked Whitefish dip I have ever had.  There are a lot of choices for Whitefish dip Up North, but I highly suggest you give this one a try!  You will not be disappointed.

Bob Jo's Frozen Custard - Wyandotte

Bob Jo's Frozen Custard in Wyandotte
Bob Jo's on Fort Street in Wyandotte isn't much to look at, but the line of people outside tells you all that you need to know.  This place is simple and good.  The sign says "Established 1947" and I doubt much has changed since then.  Bob Jo's has frozen yogurt, novelties, and blizzards, but you don't want that!  You want the frozen custard!  The texture is just so thick and dense, you can tell that this stuff is bad for you - but that's why it tastes so good. This is a soft-serve custard that always comes in Vanilla, Chocolate, and Half Vanilla - Half Chocolate.  My usual favorite is Half and Half with either rainbow sprinkles, chocolate sprinkles, or toasted coconut on top.  They have a rotating special flavor which changes about every week or so.  Everyone has their favorite special flavor, and mine is English Toffee or Creamsicle.

The Custard and Yogurt Menu

On this particular trip, I got Half and Half with rainbow sprinkles.  (Seriously the best sprinkles ever.) My Dad got a caramel Sunday with the vanilla custard.  My sister got a Vanilla cone with peanuts.

As we stood in line, we chatted with the other people.  One man said that he drove all the way from Redford (about 30 minutes away!) in order to get this Sunday treat.  He insisted that the recipe hadn't changed since he was young, and it is his absolute favorite.  He drove that whole way just to get a small vanilla cone.  The woman in front of us told us that her favorite flavor was Pistachio, which they had the previous week.  Like many ice cream stands in Michigan, Bob Jo's closes for the winter - which makes it even more important to get it while it's open!  It is right in the middle of Downriver's Dream Cruise which is a classic car cruise on Fort Street.  Expect to see classic cars stopping by on any Sunday.  People enjoy cruising in their classic cars up to get an old-fashioned ice cream.
